Eliud Kipchoge
Kenya

Eliud Kipchoge is a renowned Kenyan long-distance runner, primarily competing in marathon events. He is considered one of the greatest marathon runners of all time, holding the world record for the marathon with a time of 2:01:39, set at the 2018 Berlin Marathon. Kipchoge also gained global attention by completing a marathon distance in under two hours during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in 2019, though it was not an official world record due to controlled conditions. He has won numerous major marathons, including the London and Berlin Marathons, and is a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the marathon (2016, 2020).

In this episode of Sole Sisters, training has hit a slight road bump for Alice and Elise. Elise is in the barrel of the beast, training for Ballarat Marathon. She’s facing a minor hurdle this week with a calf niggle but remains upbeat and positive, and hopes it’ll settle quickly with some deloading and extra TLC. Meanwhile Alice has some foot issues of her own to contend with which may rule her out from racing the Nike After Dark Tour 21.1k (though she'll still be there to get amongst it).
The pair dissect what a marathon training week looks like for Elise at the moment and also cover Alice’s typical training week, as well as her Cyclone Alfred-induced recovery period without electricity.
They talk through some recent running news, including Izzi Batt-Doyle and Leanne Pompeani’s Nagoya Marathon results, the big Eliud Kipchoge announcement for Sydney Marathon and some star athletes to watch out for at Maurie Plant meet in Melbourne. The ep closes out with the usual recommendations – including some cultured/artsy ones from AB.

With the 2025 marathon season just around the corner, our editors Alex, Katelyn and Michael ask: who (if anyone) will finally break the two-hour barrier on a legal marathon course? They explore the science behind running a sub-two marathon, the evolution of shoe technology, Eliud Kipchoge's Breaking2 and INEOS 1:59 Challenge events, and the haunting spectre of the world record holder, late Kelvin Kiptum. They then get into where, when and who could finally break this elusive barrier in distance running.

Jason and Kevin discuss Conner Mantz and Weini Kelati breaking American records at the Houston Half Marathon, Shelby Houlihan's first race back from suspension, Eliud Kipchoge running the London Marathon and the mystery of Jason's viking helmet.

“Especially after 36K, I was telling myself, ‘Even if they speed up, I have to go deep today…’ I was telling myself, ‘This is my moment.’”
My guest for today's episode is Abdi Nageeye, whose journey in 2024 could only be described as redemption at its finest. The Dutch marathoner and 2021 Olympic silver medalist who just three months ago grappled with his appointment after withdrawing late in the Olympic marathon in Paris, roared back to claim the biggest victory of his career at the TCS New York City Marathon.
In a thrilling showdown against one of the strongest fields in race history, Nageeye deployed patience, strategy, and a powerful finishing kick to secure his first World Marathon Major title in 2:07:39 seconds, making history as the first Dutchman and the first European since 1996. To win the New York City Marathon from his self coach training in Eldoret to a race plan honed by years of experience on the course, Abdi turned heartbreak into triumph.
We dive into his reflections on Paris, his mental and physical preparation for New York City, and what this victory means for him moving forward. But first, you'll also hear a never before released interview with Abdi from my trip to Kenya in June 2023, where we discussed a bit more of his backstory and upbringing from being born in Somalia to settling in the Netherlands as a refugee and spending time in Syria before finally being adopted by a Dutch family.
I initially planned for this to be released last fall, but didn't have a chance to, but I'm now glad it's finally out. It's fun because towards the end of that first interview, I asked him what he wants to accomplish and he finally gets it done. Part one is my interview with him in Kenya and then part two is my interview with him reflecting on New York.

Eliud Kipchoge, the greatest marathoner in history, turned 40 on Nov. 5. In celebration of the GOAT becoming a masters athlete, our editors Alex, Katelyn and Michael look back at how Kipchoge single-handedly innovated distance running.
They explore how Kipchoge was the face of the super shoe revolution and Nike's technological discoveries as he strived to break the two-hour barrier in the marathon. Kipchoge also put nutrition and fueling front-and-center for marathon training and racing, and elevated Maurten into the powerhouse brand it is today.
They do a deep dive on all the sports science breakthroughs triggered by Kipchoge's superhuman performances, his psychological strategies for running record breaking times, and put it all into context as discoveries that can be applicable for runners of all abilities levels.

One year after the late Kelvin Kiptum obliterated Eliud Kipchoge’s previous world record by 34 seconds, running an almost unfathomable 2:00:35, Ruth Chepngetich topped that. Her astounding time of 2:09:56 is one of the greatest running performances in history, makes her the first woman to run under 2:10 in a marathon, and lopped one minute and 57 seconds off Tigist Assefa’s old world record.
On the men’s side, Kenya’s John Korir notched his first-ever World Marathon Majors victory in 2:02:44. (What a time for the sport of marathoning we’re in right now, where a 2:02 showing is basically a footnote!)

Our editors Alex, Katelyn and Michael break down everything you need to know about this Sunday's Berlin Marathon, including how to live stream the race, key storylines, a bit of the fascinating history of the marathon, and who will win each race. They discuss the significance of the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Marathon, its ranking as a World Marathon Major, why so many marathon world records have been achieved on this course, and the legacy of both Eliud Kipchoge and Kenenisa Bekele at the race. 2024 marks the first time in 11 years that the Berlin Marathon will not feature either Kipchoge (the 2022 and 2023 champion) or Bekele.
After last year's world record performance in Berlin by Tigst Assefa, will the 2024 edition of the marathon feature a new breakout star and a record breaking run? Our editors weigh in on who might win in Berlin, and the outlook of elite marathon running in the next few years.

On this week's pod, Alex, Katelyn and Michael begin with Alex's latest YouTube video, in which he goes Strava segment hunting in front of Drake's $100 million mansion. Then, they briefly break down the just-announced 2024 New York City Marathon elite fields, with a surprising number of Olympic marathoners on the list.
And then, they dive deep into the big topic of the day (inspired by the Paris Olympic marathons to some degree). Whether your running a local 5K, a track race, a mid-season half marathon or a big goal race like the Boston Marathon or New York, every race has its dark moments. So in this pod, we'll go deep on the dreaded DNF (Did Not Finish).
We cover:
- What does the DNF mean in the context of running and racing
- Recent cases of DNFs in the Olympics (Eliud Kipchoge, Fiona O'Keeffe)
- When to Consider a DNF (spoiler: almost never)
- When not to DNF (spoiler: almost always)
- Strategies and prevention tips to avoid a DNF
- Katelyn, Alex, and Michael share their own experiences with DNF, plus lessons learned and advice for listeners
