“This wasn’t a dream, I didn't study journalism, I didn't have any aspirations of being on television, but I love the fact that this is how I get to stay involved with the sport and be a steward and some sort of conduit for, at least on the field side, the joy and awe of the spectacle of what these men and women are able to do.”
Trey Hardee, Olympic silver medalist and 2x world champion in the decathlon, joins the show to chat about his transition into track and field broadcasting, his ideas on how to improve + grow the sport, his love for field events, and lots more. I love every podcast I do, but every now and again one really impacts me. Today’s episode with Hannah Steelman did that. Hannah most recently graduated from the University of North Carolina State and signed her first professional contract with On Running.
Aside from her accolades on the track, Hannah is full of wisdom and inspiration on so many topics. In this episode we dive into the importance of being process-oriented, staying focused on yourself, the importance faith has played in Hannah’s running/life, and so many other meaningful subjects! Lastly, we answer your unique listener questions. We talk about Drake, making Gordon Ramsay dinner, and the three things she’ll miss most about her Wolfpack
Hannah is someone who I’m so grateful to have had the privilege of talking to. I sincerely can’t wait to see what she does in this next stage of her life!

“I honestly never expected entering CU to leave the way I did. I know that Colorado gave me everything I needed to succeed. Mark and Heather gave me every opportunity and every chance in the world to be great. Because of that, I’ll always root for them and I’ll always root for the Buffs. I’m really just grateful for the experience I had and I know there will be more athletes like me.”
Dani Jones joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast after announcing that she has decided to forego her remaining NCAA eligibility to turn professional and sign with Hawi Management. The four-time NCAA champion out of the University of Colorado said she will be joining Joe Bosshard’s Boulder-based training group that includes Emma Coburn, Aisha Praught, Dominique Scott and Cory McGee.
We run through the decision-making process that took place after the COVID-19 pandemic wiped away her attempt at an 800/mile double at the 2020 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and then her last remaining outdoor season. This outdoor season was going to be focused on winning the NCAA 1,500 meter title, hitting the Olympic standard in the same event and making a push at the U.S. Olympic trials. With the Summer Games and trials postponed a year, Jones is among the athletes who could reap the benefit of one more year of training.
Jones takes us through the biggest races of her Colorado career including the 2017 NCAA indoor titles in the DMR and 3,000m, the 2018 NCAA cross country individual and team title and last year’s NCAA 5,000m outdoor title, which came shortly after her father’s passing.
We also touch on the influence of coaches Mark and Heather Burroughs in her development, training with Jenny Simpson and where she stands among the greats that have come out of Colorado. (Plus, her Mt. Rushmore of Colorado Buffaloes)

Last August, we witnessed the most electrifying track race in history at the World Championships: the women's 3,000m Steeplechase.
Before this race, no American woman had ever won a medal in the steeple at the World Championships.
Emma Coburn and Courtney Frerichs changed that with an historic 1-2 finish, decimating a field that included the current World Record holder and Olympic Champion.
This was also the first time any Americans had taken home both gold and silver at the World Champions or the Olympics in a race longer than 400m since the 1912 Olympics.
Both Emma and Courtney also ran faster than the existing American Record.
NBC Sports called the race "shocking."
Sports Illustrated described Courtney's effort "certainly one of the biggest surprises of the world championships."
And ESPN boldly proclaimed that this was one of the best races in the history of running.
I'll paraphrase ESPN:
Before this race, Courtney' fastest steeplechase time was 9:19. She beat that time by an enormous 15 seconds to win silver in 9:03.77. That's like scoring a hat trick in a World Cup soccer game after totaling only three goals all season.
No American had won a world title in steeplechase since 1952. No U.S. women had ever finished 1-2 in any world championship distance race. Track nerds -- why isn't there such a thing as a football nerd? -- are calling this the most thrilling race of the 2017 World Championships, and one of the greatest moments in American distance running history.
You sports fans can just call it amazing. Like a football game where -- nah, forget that. After a race like this, nobody cares about football.
A 15-second improvement? Over a race that's less than two miles long? INSANITY!
That kind of PR puts Courtney in the record books. She's now the 8th fastest woman to ever run the steeplechase.
Today you're going to hear directly from Courtney about this historic race.
Carrie interviews American record holder and Olympic bronze medalist Emma Coburn! Emma reflects on her 2016 accomplishments, her change in coaches, and her photo shoot for the ESPN Body Issue.
