Emmanuel Wanyonyi, the 21-year-old world and Olympic 800m champion, delivered a stunning performance in just his second elite 1500m race at the Kip Keino Classic. Despite a slow middle section, Wanyonyi closed with a 54-second final lap to win in 3:30.41. Reynold Cheruiyot, the 2023 World Championship bronze medalist, finished second in 3:34.73. Timothy Cheruiyot was only sixth. Notably, US champion Jonah Koech was entered but did not race — even his agent doesn't know why. The discussion turns to Wanyonyi's future in the 1500m, with comparisons to Seb Coe's legendary 800/1500 double at the 1984 Olympics. His coach says the focus remains on the 800 this season, but the LA 2028 Olympic schedule has been designed to allow the 800/1500 double.
