Keely Hodgkinson After Withdrawing From The Keely Klassic Due To Injury, On Modernizing Track Meets
Video

Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson is OUT for the Keely Klassic after picking up a hamstring injury in practice. She still attended the meet to greet fans and support the other British athletes. She wrote on her Instagram page: “I am so gutted and disappointed to be announcing this, unfortunately after a great week of preparations for this weekend, yesterday I picked up a hamstring injury, which means I’ll have to sit this one out this weekend and not compete. I’m devastated to be missing the launch of the first @keelyklassic , me and my team worked so hard these last couple of months to put me in a perfect position to race, and I was so excited to perform in front of a home crowd !! BUT… this event was never just about me. From the start, it was about bringing fresh energy to our sport, celebrating British talent, and connecting with the next generation of fans. And we look forward to still bringing that to life. I will still be there on Saturday and Still super excited to be supporting my teammates, seeing the crowd and watching an incredible day of athletics. I look forward to seeing some of you there and I hope you all enjoy it too ❤️‍🔥” Jolanda Čeplak’s indoor 800m world record of 1:55.82 from 2002 survives.

Georgia Bell On Her Remarkable Comeback From A Five-Year Break From Track To Make The British Olympic Team + Run 3:56 For 1500m
Podcast

"When I quit after college, I genuinely thought, ‘That's it. I'll never go back to track.’ I just wish I'd heard more stories like mine where you take a huge break, get back into something that you love, and make it to a really high level… It's just nice to know that there's not one route to make it to the Olympics."

Georgia Bell and I connected after she just ran 3:56.54 at the Monaco Diamond League to become the second-fastest British woman of all time over 1500m. She had shared that she’s a fan of the show and I’ve been following her story closely this season and it’s remarkable.

She quit track seven years ago after finishing up her college eligibility at Cal – but after dabbling in the duathlon, she decided to make a comeback this year. It has been nearly perfect as she has won the British 1500m indoor and outdoor national titles, finished 4th in the World Indoor Championship final, earned a European Championship silver medal and is now headed to the Olympic Games for Team GB.

She did much of it in the beginning of the year while balancing a full-time job in cybersecurity. She trains under coach Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows and in the same training group that included Olympic silver medalist Keely Hodgkinson. Georgia explains how her training set-up works since she’s still living in London most of the time and has to do much of her own training solo – while also still incorporating a bunch of biking.

211. Speed for Long Races, Olympic Trials and Western States, vVO2 Workouts, Roger Federer's Speech on Belief, and Bicarb Hacks!
Podcast

We thought long and hard about alien physiology before recording this great episode! The main topic was a wildly cool wrinkle in training science. Across all different types of events, the most predictive variable for performance is often how fast an athlete can go at VO2 max effort. That could have massive implications for how we think about training and what we consider "specificity" for long events!

We discussed why we think that is, along with workout designs, the use of hills, and how much we want to get aliens on a treadmill. ET can phone home after ET does a VO2 max test.

And this one was full of our favorite topics! Other topics: Addie dog going strong at nearly 12 years old, the upcoming Olympic Trials on the track, our wild travel schedule between the Trials and Western States, stroller running and our worrisome experience, sodium bicarbonate hacks, workout design, the power of using set-based structures, running economy and other predictors in ultras, a new study on fatigue resistance/durability and its relation to training status, Alex Honnold running the Lavaredo 50k, Roger Federer's wonderful speech on perseverance, messages about ferritin increases from liposomal iron, Joey Chestnut's ban from the hot dog eating contest and what it says about sponsorships, the increasing cost of shoes, Keely Hodgkinson's low-volume approach with lots of cross training, and hot takes.

When the aliens arrive, we should give them a cup of chocolate Nesquik so they can experience our finest delicacies. Then it's straight onto the treadmill for some podcast content.

We love you all! HUZZAH! Aliens!

Emergency Podcast: Prefontaine Classic Distance Recap | Josh Kerr Beats Jakob Inegrbigtsen In Epic Bowerman Mile Showdown
Podcast

It was a race for the ages. The Prefontaine Classic Bowerman Mile delivered on the hype with 9 men breaking 3:50 and reigning World champ Josh Kerr taking down reigning Olympic champ Jakob Ingebrigtsen 3:45.34 to 3:45.60.

No amount of trash talk can trump results, and Kerr has not lost to Ingebrigtsen since June of last year.

Chris Chavez, Mac Fleet and Karen Lesiewicz had to record a podcast about it immediately after.

We also talk about:

– Keely Hodgkinson shows the world why she’s the one to watch in the women’s 800m, clocking a world leading 1:55.78 and defeating reigning World champ Mary Moraa.

– Diribe Welteji clocks her fourth sub-4 of the season with a 3:53.75 victory in the 1500m, leading 6 athletes under 4 and holding off a hard-charging Jessica Hull (3:55.97, Australian record).

– Elle St. Pierre keeps her incredible 2024 season rolling with a big 3:56.00 personal best in the 1500m, good for 3rd place. St. Pierre moves up from #6 to #2 on the U.S. all-time list. More takeaways from the 1500m.
