Podcast

It's always a fantastic day when I get to catch up with the incredible Natasha Wodak. It’s been a hot minute since we last spoke, so we had a lot to talk about: her Olympic experience running with Malindi Elmore, the Boston Marathon, and oh just a couple more Canadian national championships under her belt. No big deal. Natasha also now trains with Trent Stellingwerff, and she talks about what it’s been like to make that transition. We also chatted about what her race season might look like after she missed the London Marathon due to injury and illness. Don't miss our rapid-fire questions at the end of the interview. I'm kind of getting addicted to them...

Boston Marathon Pro Field

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) has announced more than 140 athletes will compete at the 126th Boston Marathon as part of the John Hancock Professional Athlete Team. Olympians, Paralympians, and global marathon winners will race from Hopkinton to Boston on April 18 and will be the first race held on the traditional Patriots’ Day date since 2019.

The Boston Marathon made history last year by becoming the first Abbott World Marathon Major event to offer equal $50,000 course record bonuses across open and wheelchair divisions, and the first event to provide a designated prize purse for athletes with upper limb, lower limb, and visual impairments. For the 37th year, prize money awards will be provided by principal sponsor John Hancock.

Who Wore What? These Were the Top Shoes at the 2022 Boston Marathon

Ever since the first carbon-plated super shoes hit the roads, they’ve dominated the pro running conversation. With any speedy performance, we want to know: What latest shoe technology were they wearing?

That was certainly the case for Monday’s thrilling Boston Marathon where Peres Jepchirchir and Ababel Yeshaneh fought until the very last mile for their glory moment. In the end, it was Jepchirchir who out-kicked Yeshaneh 2:21.01 to 2:21.05.

In the context of super shoes, though, it may as well have been a head-to-head battle between Adidas and Nike, two Goliaths in the space. And though Nike had more racers finish in the top 15 wearing its shoes, the eventual 2022 Boston Marathon champion was wearing a pair of Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 2’s.

Curious what the other ultra-fast women were racing in on Marathon Monday? We tracked down the 6 shoes that were worn by the top 15 women.

Degitu Azimeraw (8th place), Nell Rojas (10th place, first American finisher), and Bria Wetsch (15th place) round out the list of top 15 Boston finishers that raced in Nikes on Monday.

EP 92. Malindi Elmore

Not only is Malindi Elmore the Canadian Women’s record holder in the marathon, she finished 9th in the 2021 women's Olympic marathon. Malindi's race day motto “patience is power” took her through the grueling race, but also holds an even larger significance: 17 years may have passed since her last Olympic appearance, but she sure made up for lost time. We talk all about her experience from start to finish, including what a post race celebration looked like at this year's Olympics. Spoiler alert: it involved a nap.

EP 84. Siobhan McManus

For our second "How it started, how it's going" episode, I chat with B.C. runner Siobhan McManus. Siobhan has a lot of marathons under her belt, but with the guidance and support of her running coach Malindi Elmore, she looked towards a new challenge.... a 5000 metre track race. This masters athlete had never set foot on a track before; but her story will show you that even if you are also brand new to it, you too can find your place on the start line - with or without spikes.

Episode 56 | Dena Evans
Podcast
"A lot of the folks I interact with now, whether it's a newly post-collegiate athlete who's still got goals that they want to achieve, or a middle-aged athlete who has a general fitness goal they want to achieve, or they'd like go for that Boston qualifier, whatever it is, most of these goals are achievable if you stick with it and keep building the tower—I call it 'the Jenga tower.' My outlook on coaching, generally, is: Let's build the tower and we'll eventually get there. Sometimes you do have artificial timelines, but if you can avoid them that's better, and just concentrate on building on what you have done and not worrying about what you aren't. So I try to think inductively about coaching and I think that's partly due to some of these experiences—let's assume we're going to get there. It's just a question of 'how' and not 'if.'"Really enjoyed sitting down with Dena Evans for this week’s episode of the podcast. Evans is currently the coordinator and coach of the Peninsula Distance Club, a competitive post-collegiate team based in Palo Alto, California that she founded in 2007. Evans also coached at Stanford from 1999-2005, and in 2003 was named the NCAA Women’s Cross Country Coach of the year after leading the Cardinal to the national title. A few of her athletes during those years are some names you might recognize, like Lauren Fleshman, Sara Hall, Alicia Vargo, Malindi Elmore, and others. She’s also been on the coaching staff for Team USA at multiple world championships. In addition to her coaching accolades, Evans was a standout athlete at Stanford from 1992-96, where she was a three-time All American in track and also star player on the soccer team.We covered a lot of different topics in this conversation, from getting into multiple sports at a young age to her thoughts on specialization, her career at Stanford and how she juggled being a two-sport athlete, her relationship with coach Vin Lananna and how he influenced her as both an athlete and a coach, how she got into coaching and what she’s learned working with different levels of athletes over the past 20 years, what’s exciting her—and what she would change—about the sport of running right now, and a lot more. This episode is brought to you by Tracksmith.
