Chris Chavez and Preet Majithia break down a chaotic weekend in American track and field headlined by a lead vehicle disaster at the USATF Half Marathon Championships and a slate of big results at the USATF Indoor Championships.
Discussed:
– The 2026 USATF Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta were thrown into chaos when a lead vehicle guided the top women off course in the final mile with Jess McClain holding a big lead at the time. Molly Born, who stayed on course, won in 69:43. McClain, Emma Grace Hurley and Ednah Kurgat all filed appeals immediately after.
– USATF’s jury of appeals acknowledged the course was inadequately marked but said it had “no recourse within the rulebook” to alter the results, which was a ruling that drew widespread backlash. Atlanta Track Club CEO Rich Kenah took full responsibility.
– Because the race served as the selection event for the 2026 World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, the wrong turn didn’t just cost the leaders prize money but also potentially cost them spots on Team USA. The selection situation is a tangled mess with no clean fix under current rules.
– Cole Hocker won the men’s 3,000m in a blanket finish in 7:39.25. Young missed the World Indoor team by .01 to Yared Nuguse after drifting off the rail in the home straight.
– Emily Mackay won the women’s 3,000m in a five-second personal best of 8:30.01, outkicking Elle St. Pierre in the final stretch for her first US title.
– Hocker and Yared Nuguse then faded to 5th and 4th in Sunday’s 1500m, won by former UW teammates Nathan Green and Luke Houser.
– 17-year-old Cooper Lutkenhaus went 5-for-5 as a professional, winning the men’s 800m in 1:46.68 with a tactically sharp performance.
– Nikki Hiltz extended their US title streak to eight, winning the women’s 1500m in 4:11.34.
– Jordan Anthony won the men’s 60m in 6.45, beating Trayvon Bromell and Noah Lyles.
Plus: Tokyo Marathon recap, the Louis Hinchcliffe NCAA return and the Iowa State/Seth Clevenger doping investigation.

Who is Ethan Shuley? If you didn't know his name before the Osaka Marathon, you weren't alone. But his 2:07:14 just made him the 7th-fastest American marathoner of all time on a record-eligible course. He certainly does not have your typical marathon success story. Ethan was a high school standout in Kentucky who raced against Yared Nuguse, but chronic Achilles injuries derailed his college career at BYU. After running just ONE race in a BYU uniform and battling injuries for years, he quit the team entirely and walked away from competitive running. Fast forward: He's living in Japan for work and film school, attempting 100-mile ultramarathons, training completely solo, self-coaching off Strava workouts, and gradually building back his fitness. Then came the breakthrough nobody saw coming: 2:20 at Nara, 2:18 at Nagano, 2:11 at Kobe, and finally 2:07:14 at Osaka — all while unsponsored, a period while self-coached, and running 150-mile weeks on six days. In this CITIUS MAG Podcast interview, Ethan breaks down: – Why he quit BYU's track team and walked away from running – His Mormon mission to Ukraine and how it changed his perspective – Moving to Japan, attempting ultras, and getting destroyed by 60-year-old Japanese trail runners – The gradual progression from trail races to breaking 15:00 in the 5K for the first time in his life – Training solo in Kobe, learning Japanese marathon culture, and racing alongside Kenyan elites – How he went from 2:20 to 2:07 in just over a year – His strength training, fueling adjustments, and managing constant nagging injuries – The mental fortitude required to push through cramping and solo racing in Japan –Whether the 2028 US Olympic Marathon Trials are on his radar This is one of the most unlikely marathon breakthroughs in recent American history, and it's a reminder that there's no single path to greatness in distance running. 19-year-old Cam Myers didn’t just win the Wanamaker Mile, the Australian made it look easy against a stacked field that featured Olympic bronze medalist, U.S. record holder and three-time champion, Yared Nuguse, and newly-minted 2000m world record holder Hobbs Kessler. The 19-year-old Myers controlled the race from the front, weathered a late charge from Kessler, and pulled away over the final 50 meters to win in 3:47.90. Nuguse took second in 3:48.31, with Kessler crossing the line third in 3:48.68. The performance continues what has been a remarkable indoor season for Myers, who appears to have taken another leap forward from his already impressive 2025 campaign. What stood out most wasn’t just the time or the win, but it was how comfortable he looked executing his race plan while everyone else jockeyed for position behind him. Kyle Merber: “The maturity that he has. It’s not like these young guys are running fast because they’re freaks of nature—which they are—but they have a completely mature grasp of the sport that normally most of us wouldn’t have gotten until we’re in our mid-20s.” The only question now is whether Myers will make the trip to the World Indoor Championships in Poland. With the Maurie Plant Meet in Australia scheduled around the same time, it creates a difficult decision for an athlete who values the home crowd Down Under. Aisha Praught-Leer: “We have to incentivize the right things. It is a world championship. Love Maurie Plant, love the meet, love the people, love Australia—everybody in Australia knows I’m your girl—but we have to prioritize the right things. If contracts, endorsements, eyeballs are all channeling to a world championship, that is what we need to focus on. Medals are life-changing.” 🎥 Watch the full post-race show here: https://youtu.be/RWcntefA9PA?si=7s5qBTu-hIefGq7T 🎧 Take it on-the-go and listen to it in podcast form here: ▶️ APPLE PODCASTS: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/2026-millrose-games-post-race-show-live-from-the/id1204506559?i=1000747628064 ▶️ SPOTIFY: https://open.spotify.com/episode/7hnfSviJVUsg0blvf0Y0hR?si=4WdLGfq_ShKkajr0Jzbiwg __________ FOLLOW CITIUS MAG ▶ Subscribe to the podcast: https://apple.co/3Byp72I ▶ On Twitter: http://twitter.com/CitiusMag ▶ On Instagram: http://instagram.com/citiusmag ▶ On Facebook: http://facebook.com/citiusmag ▶ Support us on Patreon: https://patreon.com/citiusmag ▶ On our website: http://citiusmag.com For other inquiries, contact us: chris@citiusmag.com Thanks for watching - please like, share and comment, and subscribe! Marco Arop delivered a deceptively dominant performance in the Men’s 800m at Grand Slam Track Kingston, clocking 1:45.13 to win by over a second in windy conditions. The time may not seem spectacular for the 1:41.20 man—but it’s all about context. Arop powered through headwinds, led from the front, and still comfortably dropped Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi, who finished second (+1.31), and Bryce Hoppel (+1.89). Meanwhile, Olympic 1500m medalists Cole Hocker, Yared Nuguse, and Josh Kerr all struggled—Kerr faded to last in 1:50.68 after battling a lingering hip injury. Despite the loss, Wanyonyi’s second-place finish, combined with his 1500m win on Saturday, earned him the $100,000 Slam Champion title in the Men’s Short Distance event group. Emmanuel Wanyonyi stepped into the spotlight and didn’t blink. In one of the most stacked races of the weekend—featuring the full Olympic 1500m podium of Cole Hocker, Josh Kerr, and Yared Nuguse—it was 19-year-old Wanyonyi, better known for his 800m prowess, who owned the moment. With 40 meters to go, Wanyonyi turned on the jets, taunted his competition, and powered to a massive 3-second personal best of 3:35.18 to beat Nuguse (3:35.36) and Hocker (3:35.52) in an early signature win for both his career and the Grand Slam Track league. This was just his third-ever 1500m—and his first against a world-class field. As a Challenger in the new Grand Slam Track league, Wanyonyi was required to run both the 800m and 1500m. The result? A statement-making victory that may change how the world sees him. 📈 Top Results 🥇 Emmanuel Wanyonyi – 3:35.18 (PB) 🥈 Yared Nuguse – 3:35.36 🥉 Cole Hocker – 3:35.52 4️⃣ Josh Kerr – 3:36.23 FOLLOW CITIUS MAG ▶ Subscribe to the podcast: https://apple.co/3Byp72I ▶ On Twitter: http://twitter.com/CitiusMag ▶ On Instagram: http://instagram.com/citiusmag ▶ On Facebook: http://facebook.com/citiusmag ▶ Support us on Patreon: https://patreon.com/citiusmag ▶ On our website: http://citiusmag.com For other inquiries, contact us: chris@citiusmag.com Thanks for watching - please like, share and comment, and subscribe!
